Do people have the gift of toilet cleaning? The setup/breakdown gift? The gift of cleaning the vomit of the 7th grader who thought it was fun to chug a gallon of milk in youth group? I’m thinking not….but these are still important jobs that must be done.
At Aviator Church we’ve adopted an 80/20 rule. We ask that 80% of a volunteer’s time be spent working in the area where he/she is most passionate, while 20% of the same volunteer’s time is spent in task oriented work.
Let me break this down. In the 80% zone volunteers might work with Aviator Kids or volunteer in our student ministry or lead a life-group or be part of the Sunday morning worship team or work in hospitality. Wherever a person is most passionate, they spend 80% of their volunteer time! In the 20% zone volunteers might pick up trash or clean the restrooms or arrive to the high school early in the morning to unload the trailers or stay after the services to pack up the trailers or fold programs or wipe down nursery toys with lysol wipes.
I may not have the “gift” of picking up the half-eaten donut on the floor….but as a Christ follower and a partner of Aviator Church, I will joyfully carry the nasty donut to the trash can.
At Aviator Church we celebrate the opportunity to serve God and His people even in the small things.
Otherwise, we’d have to live with dirty toilets. :)
