So I’m walking through our office building today and totally see a penny on the ground. Do I pick it up or should leave it there? Is it even worth it? First, it takes a moment to notice the coin…then, I have to think about whether or not I should pick it up: I wonder, “Is it totally lame to pick up a penny? “…I think, who’s watching and who’s filming me picking this thing up only to show it on Facebook, Flickr or You Tube with the title “The Idiot Who Actually Picks Up Pennies.” It’s a comedic moment to slyly act like you’re tying your shoe when you’re actually picking up a flippin’ penny off the ground. In the end, if I pick it up…all I’ve got to show for the entire time-wasting, ridiculous experience is…(insert drumroll here)…1 penny.
So I ask myself, “What is my time worth?” What penny-picking up activities are in my workday/ministry? If I’m not saving, creating, or preserving revenue in my business/ministry, am I picking up pennies?
Have you ever measured some of your regular activities to understand the hourly cost it is to your organization or team?
What job, hobby, or habit are you stuck in that is paying you pennies?
What job, hobby or habit are you stuck in that is costing your job/ministry dollars?
We need to make sure we’re spending our time in ways that make sense(cents). The next time I see a penny on the ground…you better believe it’ll stay there. Now if I see 20 bucks…different story.
